Bazuje on na naszej elementarnej i pierwotnej ciekawości na temat innych osób – jesteśmy
przecież tylko ludźmi. Trójka młodych islandzkich fotografów prezentuje trzy zupełnie różne
cykle portretów. Sigga Ella sfotografowała 21 osób w różnym wieku, różnej płci i charakterze,
posiadających jednak pewną cechę wspólną: 21 chromosomów, czyli zespół Downa.
Valdimar Thorlacius spędzał czas z ludźmi żyjącymi samotnie, w całkowitej izolacji na islandzkiej
wsi i dokumentował ich pustelniczą i intrygującą egzystencję. Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir postanowiła
utrwalić portrety znajomych na tle budzącego się do życia miasta, kiedy nad Reykjavikiem
zamykają się wrota niekończących się, jasnych, letnich nocy. Wszyscy artyści podeszli do swoich
tematów zupełnie inaczej, ale każde z ich zdjęć mówi nam coś ważnego o współczesnych Islandczykach.

A good portrait draws its audience in, offering up a glimpse into the life of the subject. It draws
on our essential curiosity about other people – we are human after all.
Here three young Icelandic photographers show three very different series of portraits.
Sigga Ella photographed people of all ages and both genders, very diverse characters set against
the same background, 21 people who all have 21 chromosomes or Down syndrome.
Valdimar Thorlacius spent time with people living alone and isolated in the Icelandic countryside,
documenting their reclusive and intriguing existence. Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir captured her friends
in entourage of the euphoric morning moments after the bars close on endless and bright summer
nights in Reykjavik. Their subject matter and approach is different, yet all the images say something
about the Icelanders of today.
